Sample Work

USAID/AED

We traveled to 4 African countries the summer of 2008 to create a 30 minute high definition video for USAID and the Academy for Educational Development (AED) about NetMark, their successful program to eliminate malaria using insecticide treated mosquito nets. We had a month shooting in Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana and Senegal. A 30 minute HD documentary, 3 minute trailer and 3 individual vignettes on specific elements of the malaria prevention program were created.

Cocklins Video planned the entire trip, hired the drivers and translator, booked the hotel rooms, made the flight arrangements (11 flights across Africa with 550 lbs of gear and didn’t lose a single case!), planned the daily shoot schedule and pre-interviewed the main characters. Our group of 4 included cameraman, sound recordist, writer/producer and AED representative. On the ground using the Panasonic HDX 900 we interviewed health care workers tending the sick, mothers of children suffering from malaria and Public Health Officials who all told us the same story – the nets have made a huge difference in reducing cases of malaria.

We created a 30 minute documentary and 3 minute trailer, both closed captioned in English with optional French subtitles. We are also creating 3 short vignettes on individual aspects of the program. The documentary, vignettes and trailer are authored on a DVD, made available for streaming on the Internet and on YouTube.

The NetMark program combines the knowledge and resources of public health ministries and private companies to make, distribute and sell mosquito nets; provide advertising and education awareness to the general public on the importance of mosquito nets; and encourages small local businesses in country to supply the nets which provide employment, awareness, and a sustainable supply of nets for the future.
